چکیده

The intercapillary area of the kidney glomerulus was first described and named «mesangium» by Zimmermann in 1933 1. The advent of electron microscopy enabled Marinozzi in Italy 2 and Latta in the U.S. 3 to conclusively demonstrate that a separate cell type exists in the kidney glomerulus, in addition to epithelial and endothelial cells lining around the basement membrane. The functions of these «mesangial» cells have been subsequently elucidated, based on recognition of their contractile phenotype and involvement in a variety of glomerular diseases (table I) 4-7.

Mangosteen peel extract (Garcinia mangostana L.) as protective agent in glucose-induced mesangial cell as in vitro model of diabetic glomerulosclerosis

Objective(s): This study aims to evaluate the activity of mangosteen peels extract (MPE) as protection agent on induced-glucose mesangial cells (SV40 MES 13 cell line (Glomerular Mesangial Kidney, Mus Musculus)).  Materials and Methods: MPE was performed based on maceration method. Cytotoxic assay was performed based on MTS (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-5-(3-carboxymethoxyphenyl)-2-(4-sulfophen...

Quantitative Cell Numbers and Density of Mesangial Volume in a Rat Model with Induced Hyperglycemic and Treated with Mononuclear Derived CD133 Positive Cells

Background: There is evidence that mesangial cell structural changes contribute to the pathogenesis of diabetic nephropathy. To gain better insight into the mechanisms responsible for this issue, present study focused on effect of cord blood mononuclear cells (MNCs) derived CD133 positive cells on mesangial cell structure and function. Materials and Methods: The animals were randomly divided in...

PPARγ in Kidney Physiology and Pathophysiology

Involvement of the nuclear receptor peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARgamma) in kidney physiology has been explored recently. Synthetic PPARgamma ligands can ameliorate the diabetic kidney disease through different mechanisms, involving inhibition of mesangial cell growth, reduction of mesangial matrix, and cytokine production of glomerular cells as well as promoting endothe...

Endothelium-derived relaxing factor, nitric oxide: effects on and production by mesangial cells and the glomerulus.

The endothelium-derived relaxing factor nitric oxide (EDRF/NO) is a labile, endogenous vasodilator that is important in the control of systemic vascular tone. This review focuses on the effects of EDRF/NO on glomerular mesangial cells in vitro and on the role of EDRF/NO in mesangial and glomerular physiology and pathophysiology in vivo. It was concluded that EDRF/NO can stimulate increases in c...

ID1 inhibits USF2 and blocks TGF-β-induced apoptosis in mesangial cells.

Mesangial cells (MC) play an essential role in normal function of the glomerulus. Phenotypic changes in MC lead to the development of glomerular diseases such as diabetic nephropathy and glomerulosclerosis. The late phase of diabetic glomerulopathy is characterized by MC death and fibrosis. Current data highlight the transforming growth factor (TGF)-β as a trigger of the pathological changes ob...
